"The Border"- This 1890s photograph shows the E. Davis Tuthill Store located on the southeast corner of Skunk Lane in Peconic. Yes, you read it right! Peconic, now it is Cutchogue, but when the photograph was taken that road was considered part of Peconic. The building itself dates back to pre-1857, although in 1857 it was already owned by Tuthills. During E. Davis Tuthill's time as proprietor, the store sold the necessities needed by the families who were located outside of the main village. In 1906 it was inherited by Tuthill's grandson, Fred Richmond, and became known as Richmond's Store. The building is still located on its original site, and is currently the Down Home Store. |
